2023 Wrap Up & 2024 Business Plan

It’s that time of year to reflect on the pay year and look forward to the future! This is my favourite time of year, because I love seeing how far I’ve come and what I have to look forward to in the coming year.

My three goals for last year were to:

1. Teach

2. Create more rugs

3. Transition from digital sticker designs to traditional ones.

I managed to, more or less, meet all of these goals! I created 6 classes, hitting my goal of releasing 1 class every 2 months; created a bunch of rugs (2 large,14 medium, and 56 minis), including really leaning into tiny rug designs; and released 6 (or 7, depending on if you break up the cats and dogs into different packs) traditionally painted sticker packs. I did technically create more rugs this year than last year, but most of them were mini rugs.

The biggest downside to this past year has been my health. I think it’s been the hardest year of my life in terms of my health, and there were a few times I wasn’t sure I’d make it to 2024. But I’m still here, and I’m excited about the future!

Looking forward, my main goal for 2024 is to make my business more sustainable for my health. To do this, I’d like to:

1. Replace mini rugs

2. Figure out social media

3. Create more cat work

This past year, I’ve discovered that making mini rugs is really hard on me. They require a lot of bending over and fiddly work, which messes with my blood pressure. I still want to offer affordable items for sale locally, so with that in mind, I’ve recently invested in a 3d printer. This will hopefully let me design some fun objects and create them without my direct input. Then I can focus on painting them to ensure they’re all unique. They won’t be as tactile as mini rugs, but hopefully I’ll be able to create something really fun.

I’d like to get better with social media and find a way to use it that benefits my art business without compromising my health. I’m thinking of trying video content, be that long form on YouTube or short form on TikTok. I need to experiment and see what works for me. Maybe I could do painting tutorials on YouTube for free… Or speed paints with voice overs explaining my techniques? Right now, Skillshare drives all my students through their own listings, and I’d like to bring in my own students and reach more people.

And my final goal is really leaning into creating more cat work, because I looooove painting cats! I essentially create for two audiences: online and in-person. In-person audiences prefer cats and dogs, while online audiences prefer reptiles and less common animals. I absolutely adore painting turtles, frogs, and lizards; but cats are my top favourite animal. I feel I shy away from painting them to cater to my online audience. That can definitely take a toll on my mental health, which feeds back into my physical health. With my health deteriorating, I don’t want to worry about money at the cost of not following my passion 100%.

That’s it for my goals for next year! I’m really excited to see how they come together and change over time. I want to thank all you fantastic people for joining me on this amazing journey so far! I hope your 2024 is full of colour and new experiences! Do you have any life or work-related goals for the next year?

Tarts Sticker 2023

Here’s my shop freebie sticker for this year! Tarts is all about apples this year. I really enjoyed painting this little guy. Besides being my brand mascot, he’s also just super fun to draw with his big, round head and tiny, noodly arms.

I’m actually planning to repaint this piece in rainbow colours to better match my other stickers. For now, this little guy goes out in every order from my online or Etsy shops!

My rug tufting class on Skillshare

2023 Goals

There are a few changes I want to make in how I do things, and the new year feels like the perfect time to do it!

First, I’d like to focus more on producing educational content. I’ve always felt drawn to teaching, but my physical health has prevented me from teaching in person for many years. Producing my first class for Skillshare has helped me feel more confident that teaching online is a viable option! I plan to produce one class every month (or every two months, depending on my health) to be published on Ko-fi, Patreon, and possibly Skillshare. Since Skillshare requires a pretty strict structure, I need more experience to know if I’ll be able to follow their guidelines in a reasonable amount of time. I’ll also be reviving my YouTube channel and posting shorter tutorials there for free.

For donation-based content, I’m switching my physical rewards to Ko-fi from Patreon. My Ko-fi offers tiers for just tutorials; tutorials and a monthly sticker; and tutorial, a sticker, and a 6×4” print. My Patreon will now only have one tier for access to tutorials. I feel like Ko-fi is more available as a one-off payment option while Patreon is better for subscriptions, and I’d like to make it as easy as possible for people to choose what works best for them.

Finally, I’ll be reducing the number of sticker packs I offer in my Etsy shop, and I’ll be focusing on recreating my most popular packs in rainbow style watercolour. I’ve been unhappy with the huge number of digital designs compared to my limited number of prints and traditionally painted designs, and I feel this change is a good step forward. The downside is that it takes longer to paint one sticker design traditionally than it does to create a whole sticker pack digitally, and it will likely take me one or two months to release a full pack.

Thank you for your amazing support! I hope you have a fantastic and prosperous 2023!

Patreon Update

Hello, Lovelies! I’ve just updated my Patreon tiers to include a couple commission/pet portrait tiers. These tiers allow you to pay $10 or $15 a month to go towards a custom portrait. Plus you get all the normal Patreon benefits, like behind the scenes shots and works in progress.

Rugs

Rugs Page

Sorry for the radio silence lately. I’ve been hecking busy! I’ve just added a new page to the site for rugs. Check it out here to see what I’ve been making for the past month: RUGS

All of the rugs listed have found homes except the cat in this blog post. That one is going up for charity auction at Isaac’s Way here in Fredericton to help pay for art lessons for underprivileged kids!

Commissions Open

I’d like to thank everyone for being so patient these past couple months as I’ve gotten my health in order. Thank you for being awesome! I’m feeling much better now, and I’m opening custom pet portrait orders again. To order, please go to the “Shop” section of my site, click “Custom orders” and choose which type of pet portrait you would like, or you can use these links to go directly to their listings on Etsy:

Rolling Scuzzy Cat + Commissions Update

I painted this little Scuzzy cat I think late last month? Just after the rosy maple moth painting. I really enjoyed painting a more detailed subject in this style! Plus you know I’m all about painting cats. This little guy is available as a sticker on my Etsy shop.

Commissions update: Sorry it’s taking me forever to open up custom pet portrait orders. I keep running into health problems one after another. (Chronic illness life, yo.) I probably won’t be able to take custom work until August, but I’ll keep you all posted. Thank you so much for your patience!

Heart and Custom Art Update

Something kinda different; here’s the piece I painted for my husband for our 10th marriage anniversary last week. I was expecting this to be pretty quick since both characters have simple designs, but it actually took forever. I guess I’m still learning this style, and it’s taking a lot more layers than I anticipated.

Regarding custom portraits: Thank you all so much for your patience while I’ve been taking time to finish projects behind the scenes. I had planned to begin taking custom portraits again this week, but unfortunately I’ve had some health issues crop up. (Just part of being chronically ill, unfortunately.) I’m hoping to begin accepting custom work again next week. Thank you all for being so patient and awesome!
